Is an artist more than their tools? In 2001, David Hockney hypothesised that Renaissance and Old Master painters used optical aids in the creation of their works; tracing scenes directly onto canvas using camera obscura, camera lucida, and convex mirrors. This intriguing and divisive argument was the basis for a series of visual pieces created for Taupe by Irene P Tello and I. Layering a conversation between Hockney and Hans Ulrich Obrist with 3D visuals, and moments of illumination and darkness, the work explores the connection between optical experiments and art.
